Mateo Díaz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University, with a secondary appointment in Computer Science. Before joining Hopkins in 2023, he spent two years at Caltech as a postdoctoral scholar. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at Cornell University in 2021. He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and in Systems and Computing Engineering, and a master’s in Mathematics from Universidad de los Andes (Colombia). Mateo’s research lies at the intersection of continuous optimization, geometry, and statistics, focusing on developing efficient large-scale algorithms for data science, machine learning, and signal processing. His work has been recognized by several awards, including the Beale–Orchards-Hay Prize, a NSF CAREER, and a Sloan Research Fellowship in Mathematics.
